How I Fell in Love with Romantasy

Like every reader, my tastes have evolved over time. They have gone back and forth from this to that over the years. However, over-archingly, there seem to be two genres that I find myself gravitating towards more than others.

Fantasy and romance. I think we can all agree that both are great on their own, including all the subgenres beneath each umbrella category.

But romantasy? *Chef’s kiss*

It’s the ultimate pairing. It’s the subgenre of all subgenres. So much so that some may even argue it’s a genre all its own.

The beauty in romantasy is how both leading elements in the storyline are equally important. For someone as obsessed with character and relationship driven stories as I am, this feels like the perfect landing pad for me—both as a reader and a writer.

What I love the most is how much there is to play with when it comes to the genre. Fantasy has always been a draw for me because it allowed me to escape reality and break up the monotony of everyday life. Now add in some heart-wrenching love stories on top of that, and I’m doubly sold.

Romantasy manages to create an immersive experience in a way that touches on something close to reality while also leaving you teetering on the edge of something filled with mystical beings, epic quests, and, potentially, dare I say… dragons? All while still experiencing the emotional depth of everyday basic human connection.

Not to mention, there are endless ways one could fall in love. Between the slow burns and the hot and heavy passion-filled steamy pages that have you at the edge of your seat, ready to devour chapter after chapter to find out what happens next, it gives authors and readers infinite possibilities. Intimacy on all levels is always better when you can feel the pulse of magic in the room intertwined with whatever natural tension is also there, am I right?

With romantasy, there’s something that can be found for everyone. You want the potential for epic battles with action and adventure? Check. A hero/heroine ready to sacrifice themselves to defeat whatever evil is ready to take over the world? Check. You want sexual tension that has you gripping your reading outlet of choice until you’re sure you’re either going to rip it in half or break your fingers off? Double check.

I’d love to know what some of your favorite romantasy reads are! Let me know in the comments or post them and tag me on IG!

Until next time!
